A golden fort that people still live in after almost nine centuries, havelis carved like lace, and the Thar desert turning pink at dusk.

Best time: November to February; the dunes at sunset, the fort and havelis in the morning.

Bada Bagh
The sandstone cenotaphs of Jaisalmer's royal family, built over four centuries on a ridge outside the city.
Patwon ki Haveli
Five merchant mansions built by the Patwa family in the 19th century, their sandstone fronts carved as finely as lace.
Jaisalmer Fort
The golden fort, founded in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, is still lived in: thousands of people have homes inside its walls.
Sam sand dunes
The rolling dunes of the Thar, about 40 km from Jaisalmer, where camels cross at sunset.

From the fort's rooftops the whole golden city spreads out below.
