  • From the bride’s parents

With joy in our hearts, we invite you to the engagement of our daughter Tanya with Vikram. Please join us and bless them both. The time and the place are on the invite.

  • From the groom’s parents

Our son Vikram is getting engaged to Tanya, and we would love you to be there. Come for the rings, stay for dinner, and bless them both.

  • From you two, for friends

Yes, it’s real! We’re getting engaged, and we want our people there. Come eat, dance and watch us try to get the rings on.

  • For a roka, close family only

The families have said yes! Join us for Tanya and Vikram’s roka, a small evening with the people closest to us. Bring your blessings, and your appetite.

Roka, sagai, mangni: one day, many names

Punjabi families have the roka and the chunni chadana. In UP, Bihar and Rajasthan it’s the sagai or the mangni, and often a tilak at the groom’s home. Marathi families call it the sakhar puda, Tamil families the nichayathartham, and everyone knows the ring ceremony.

Your card says it the way your family does, in Hindi or English: roka, sagai, ring ceremony, tilak or engagement.

When to send it

Engagements come at short notice, often days or a couple of weeks after the families agree. Send the invite as soon as the date and the place are fixed, and call the elders too.

What guests wear and bring

Festive, but a little lighter than the wedding: a bright suit or saree, a kurta or a bandhgala. Close family usually bring sweets, fruit or a gift for the couple, and everyone brings blessings.

Your engagement, then your wedding

Add the engagement as a function with its own card. When the wedding comes, the haldi, the sangeet and the reception follow in the same design.

Questions

What is the difference between a roka and a sagai?

The roka is the families’ first formal yes, usually small and at home. The sagai, or engagement, is often bigger, with rings exchanged. Many families now hold them on the same day.

When should we send the engagement invite?

As soon as the date and the place are fixed. Engagements often come at short notice, so WhatsApp first, then a call to the elders.

What should an engagement card say?

Both your names, the families, the time, the place and a warm line asking guests to bless you. Copy one of the messages on this page to start.

Can we see the engagement invite with our names?

Yes. Type your names at the top, and every design on this page shows them. No sign-up.

Can our engagement be part of our wedding invite later?

Yes. The engagement is a function with its own card, and the wedding functions join it in the same design.
