The order of a Hindi shaadi card

1. The invocation: “॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥”, often with a shloka.

2. “शुभ विवाह”, and the blessing of the elders, the living and the late.

3. The couple, with their honorifics and the other family’s names.

4. The date, the venue and the programme: baraat, varmala, pheras and dinner.

5. The families who wait to see you and welcome you: दर्शनाभिलाषी and स्वागतोत्सुक.

6. The hosts’ names under विनीत, and often a little verse from the children, the बाल मनुहार.

The honorifics, in one minute

श्री and श्रीमती for Mr and Mrs. चि., for चिरंजीव, before the groom’s name: may he live long. सौ. कां., for सौभाग्यकांक्षिणी, before the bride’s, or आयु. for आयुष्मती.

स्व., for स्वर्गीय, before a late grandparent’s name. And सपरिवार on the envelope, so the whole family knows they’re invited.

दर्शनाभिलाषी and स्वागतोत्सुक

दर्शनाभिलाषी are the family who long to see you there, often the elders and the extended family. स्वागतोत्सुक are the ones waiting at the gate to welcome you, usually the brothers, sisters and cousins.

The first card goes to Ganesh ji

Before any guest gets a card, the first one is offered to Ganesh ji or your family deity, with a little haldi, roli and rice. Write “श्री गणेश जी महाराज” where a guest’s name would go.

शादी कार्ड में क्या-क्या लिखा जाता है?

सबसे ऊपर श्री गणेशाय नमः, फिर शुभ विवाह और बड़ों का आशीर्वाद। उसके बाद वर-वधू के नाम, दिनांक, स्थान और कार्यक्रम, फिर दर्शनाभिलाषी और स्वागतोत्सुक, और आख़िर में विनीत के साथ मेज़बान परिवार का नाम।

Whose name comes first on the wedding card?

Each family puts its own child first. On the bride’s family’s card her name comes first, and on the groom’s family’s card his does.

How do we mention a late grandparent?

Write स्व. before the name, as in “स्व. श्रीमती कमला देवी”. Many families add a line in their memory under the blessing, and there’s one to copy on this page.

What do चि. and सौ. कां. mean?

चि. is चिरंजीव, a blessing for a long life, written before the groom’s name. सौ. कां. is सौभाग्यकांक्षिणी, a blessing for a happy married life, written before the bride’s.

Ganesh ji ko shadi ke card par kya likhe?

Write “श्री गणेश जी महाराज” in the guest’s name place, and invite him with Riddhi-Siddhi to bless the wedding. Offer the card with haldi, roli and rice before any guest gets one.
